Do you need a treatment center ?

A treatment center will provide a range of services to those suffering from some form of dependency whether it be drugs or alcohol, and very often it may be both of these conditions. You will find at a treatment center guidance and advice on whether you need treatment and if so what treatment would be appropriate for your condition. A treatment center for drug and substance abuse will frequently be found working in close cooperation with a treatment center for alcohol abuse as the two conditions frequently occur together in what is known as “dual diagnosis”.

A treatment center may be a private or public facility that offers a treatment regime derived from a wide range of therapies and experience gained in treating addictions. Typically a treatment center will require that the individual with the dependency condition undergoes a detoxification process, known as “detox”. This usually requires medical supervision and in cases of moderate or severe addiction, should only be attempted under close medical supervision. Detox can be very traumatic, not only for the patient but also for those connected with them such as family and friends. Unsupervised detox can be fatal and harmful to the patients health, and failing to detoxify the patient properly may negate the efforts to cure the underlying cause of the addiction leading to relapse and the need to recommence treatment again.

A treatment center may very well simply specialize in detoxification depending on whether it is for drug or alcohol dependency. Often they are to be found situated within medical facilities such as hospitals and require a residential stay for as long as fourteen days though rapid detox may be accomplished in as little as few hours. It is essential to remember that detox does not cure the underlying disease of addiction but simply prepares the patient for the often longer treatment stage that follows.

A treatment center may offer residential facilities for those patients presenting moderate to severe addiction and is used to monitor and regulate a patients activities. If a long term stay is necessitated due to the level of care required, very often this is provided in a hospital setting where a rigorous approach to delivering clinically based treatment is implemented in a safe and medically supervised environment.

A residential treatment center may not however follow such a clinical approach and provide a more social based therapeutic approach to treating the patients addiction. Such a treatment center is usually located outside of a medical facility and in a relatively isolated location to cocoon the patient. This also serves to remove any social or environmental pressures that may detract from the delivery of treatment and the ability of the patient to respond to it. Such a residential treatment center usually provides a very comprehensive range of addiction services together with other services as necessary, including assistance for patients to learn or recover life skills to help them gain and keep employment once they are discharged from the treatment center.

Such a treatment center is likely to focus on using the entire community of both patients and staff as active components of a treatment program for individual patients. Patients more advanced on the road to recovery can act as mentors for patients in an earlier stage of treatment providing support and guidance from someone who has gone through what the patient is currently experienced. This also helps socialize patients who are undertaking responsibility not only for themselves but others who are suffering.

A treatment center may also be used to offer outpatient facilities and services. These facilities are very well placed to lead drug education programs in the community and act as a source of information, guidance and counseling for those affected by drug and alcohol dependency in the community. Many addicts make the decision to seek treatment by first approaching such a treatment center and receiving advice on how to tackle their condition.

A community based treatment center also acts as an addition to a recovering addicts support network upon being discharged from a residential treatment center. Addiction treatment strategies almost always focus not only treatment of the patient and their immediate condition but also on providing contingency and emergency support should a patients treatment start to break down and the urge to take part in substance or alcohol abuse returns. In instances such as this, a treatment center plays a vital role in supporting a recovering addict to curb such compulsive behavior and in the event of relapse is more immediately on hand to deliver care.

Whatever the treatment center you are considering, whether it be for substance abuse, alcohol abuse or both, you will find that there is a wide range of resources, help and guidance to help you deal with your dependency. Addiction does not just affect the individual patient, it also has a huge impact on family and their social network particularly with behavioral issues that may cause serious damage to family ties and relationships. Within a treatment center, anyone affected by addiction will be able to find the help they need and if not appropriate to their requirements they act as referral centers for numerous other services such as mental health services.

Do not be afraid to ask questions from your treatment center, they are in the business of providing information and guidance, and helping you to understand the implications of addiction and treatment for the condition. For many, seeking treatment is huge step and requires the admission that there is indeed a problem that they need help with. This may cause anxiety for the patient and their family, with feelings of shame and guilt preventing a patient from seeking treatment. A treatment center will have seen all of these things before and the staff will be highly experienced in handling these issues in a delicate and professional manner. What is important is that the patient can get the help they need to return to a more normal, less destructive life without the use of drugs and alcohol.
